suspense-a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, asin awaiting a decision or outcome, usually accompanied bya degree of apprehension or anxiety. here are four examples of suspense:
*"Must go through with it, I suppose," and thereafter dismissed everything from his mind. Warm steaming water---tired limbs---presently a shave---a cocktail--dinner. And after---? page 36
*"Ten Little Indian boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine.....One little INdian boy left all alone; He went and hanged himself and then there were one." (Ten Little Indian poem) page 31
*"Job ought to be easy enough," he ruminated. "Dont see how i can slip up on it. Hope I look all right." page 14 *"She was faintly disturbed. Everything--somehow--was a little queer. The absence of the Owens, the pale ghostlike Mrs. Rogers. And the guests! Yes, the guests were queer too. An oddly assorted party." page 30
We chose the first example because when Tony Marston says that he does not no what will happen after dinner adds suspense. It built suspense because it sounds like something bad or exciting will happen after dinner and it makes you want to read on to see what in fact will happen after dinner. I chose the second one because the Ten Little Indian poem is a poem about how ten Indian people (like the ten guests on Indian Island) die one by one until there is no one left. This builds suspense because these ten ways each person dies could be how the ten people on Indian Island die. It makes us want to keep reading to see if these are the ways each person dies. We chose the third one because when Mr. Blore is saying the job will be easy while looking at all of the guests coming, it makes the readers want to know what job? It makes Mr. Blore sound like he has something to do with the murders that are going to happen because he has to preform a job and knows all the names of the people coming when nobody else does. I chose the fourth example because it adds suspense when Vera is saying that something is queer about Indian Island, it adds uncertainty to what is queer about it.
foreshadowing-to show or indicate beforehand; prefigure *"I'm talking to you young man. The day of judgement is at hand." *"Ten Little Indian boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine.....One little INdian boy left all alone; He went and hanged himself and then there were one." (Ten Little Indian poem) page 31 *Nobody had been exactly cordial to him...Funny the way they all eyed each other--as thought they knew...Well, it was up to him. He didn't mean to bungle his job. page 36 *"Oh, really? The Ownes are frightfully keen on it, I suppose. What are they like? Do tell me." Lombard thought: " akward, this-am I supposed to have met them or not?" He said quickly: "there's a wasp crawling up you arm. No-keep quit still." He made a convincing pounce. "There. It's gone!" page 20 *"Mrs. Owen didn't mention me?" Mrs. Rogers' eyelashes flickered. "I haven't seen Mrs. Owen--not yet. We only came here two days ago."page 28 I chose the first example because it shows insight that Mr. Blore is going to die soon. It indicates it before it actually happens. I also chose the second one because the poem shows insight on how each guest may die. It has not happened yet, but it most likely will. We then chose the third one because When Lombard does not tell Vera Claythorne about the Owens, it shows that maybe he is hiding something from her and makes us want to find out. I chose the fourth one because when Mrs. Rogers also just arrived, you know something is up because everyone on that island has JUST gotten here so you can tell something is planned and something big is going to happen. It is not just a coincidence that all these random people are now at the island. Absolutely right! Not a coincidence at all! Sami- Good job! You have made good connections between the events in the story and the clues given by the author. Good job on making your links and following the directions! Mrs. M 12-7-11
